Australia is a continent in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of the locations Sam visited during the expansion of the Chiral Network.
Story[]
Background[]
The Australian continent was once part of the supercontinent Gondwana, but began pulling away from the landmass around 140 million years ago and several million years later, it had completely separated with no land bridges to other continents remained.
In the aftermath of the Death Stranding, many survivors in Australia wanted to rebuild their nation so, those who had been involved in pre-Stranding politics assumed the role of an interim government in order to lead the rebuilding efforts, in the hope of achieving their dream. However, the government's spirit of reconstruction leads to the formation of violent groups opposing it, which has led to the establishment of a private army, lead by a talented sniper, to defend itself.
In addition to the government, also a small colony of preppers was formed on the shores of an enormous tar lake in central Australia, and its people survived on fish caught in the tar.
Post-UCA Establishment[]
The establishment of the chiral network spurred the creation of the first plate gate, connecting North America to Australia. The gate first brought small marsupials to Mexico, prompting the nearby geophysics research lab to send autonomous robots to collect samples, and then the first human adventurers to survive the journey, who confirmed to Mexico and the UCA that the Australian continent had survived the Death Stranding. Upon the gate's discovery, it became theorized that expanding the chiral network to the Australian continent would repeat the phenomenon, and for this reason, APAC, which now managed the chiral network on behalf of the UCA, prepared an expedition to cross the gate and install terminals, fort cities and infrastructure for the expansion of the network.
Topography[]
The isolation in which the Australian continent found itself has allowed several species to develop and flourish. However, the Death Stranding brought profound environmental changes to Australia, profoundly changing its topography with BT areas and chiral clouds appeared, along with timefall and other such phenomena. The appearance of the plate gate has led to even more, and more dramatic, changes, with phenomena that were not observed in North America (especially not in the UCA), such as floods, forest fires, tar current anomalies and new form of BTs.
Travelling with the APAC advance expedition, Rainy has been involved in the terraforming of regions that have been ravaged by timefall and other such phenomena, terraforming their deserts and returning the environments to their former glory.
Flora and fauna[]
Several animal species are unique to the Australian continent and its outlying islands, especially marsupials that could thrive in an environment free of the large mammals that would have been their natural predators. But the Death Stranding has had a devastating effect on these creatures with their numbers dwindled, and some varieties have died out entirely, and many of Australia’s already rare animals even fewer in number.
Mining[]
The Australian mainland is host to some of the largest open-cut and underground mines.
