Customization is a feature that allows players to personalize Sam's appearance and equipment loadout. In a private room (or even at a delivery terminal in Death Stranding 2), players can change the color of Sam's gear—such as his suit, backpack, and accessories—and add functional or cosmetic attachments. Vehicles can also be customized at any garage (via a terminal), allowing for visual personalization of trikes, trucks, and more.
While Sam can freely equip and unequip certain gear and accessories in the field, customization itself is restricted to safe zones like private rooms and garages. This includes aesthetic adjustments—such as color schemes and backpack charms—as well as functional modifications, like pouches and extra batteries. Be sure to plan and personalize your loadout before departing, especially for extended treks where preparation can make all the difference.
Accessory color schemes[]
Select accessories—namely sunglasses and caps—can be customized by changing their color. While Sam can be gifted multiple pairs of eyewear across both games, the only frames that support color customization are the "Ludens Mask" sunglasses and the "Sam" sunglasses. Likewise, while a variety of caps are made available, only specific ones can be recolored. In Death Stranding, customization is limited to just the Bridges-issued cap. In Death Stranding 2, only the "Why Me?" hat, KJP hat, and Drawbridge hat are customizable. New color data are unlocked by increasing the connection level with various facilities. Additionally, owners of the Director's Cut gain access to two exclusive colors: chiral gold and omnireflector.

Equipment[]
Equipment refers to the attachable gear that can be added to Sam's backpack to aid him while out in the field. This includes traversal tools like stabilizers and extra batteries, tactical enhancements such as armor or ammo cases, and utility items like pouches for increased carrying capacity. Most equipment pieces are rather sizable and occupy backpack space, so careful planning is essential—especially since equipment cannot be swapped in or out once Sam is on the move. In Death Stranding, equipment must be fabricated and configured within a private room. In Death Stranding 2, this functionality is expanded to include delivery terminals as well.

Patches[]
Added in the Director's Cut, patches are commemorative accessories awarded to Sam either as a token of gratitude for his efforts or upon reaching the maximum connection level with a facility. They are weightless, occupying a 1x1 space, and can be equipped alongside other backpack attachments. While purely cosmetic, patches must still be fabricated, meaning they come with a material cost: in Death Stranding, each patch requires 80 units of resins, whereas in Death Stranding 2, fabrication only costs 5 cc of chiral crystals.

Suit color schemes[]
While not accessible until after completing the main story of Death Stranding, Sam's standard-issue Bridges suit can be recolored. Suit customization is handled through the same menu as sunglasses and cap customization. Once the feature is unlocked, all available suit colors are immediately accessible. Owners of the Director's Cut also gain two exclusive color schemes: silver and gold. In Death Stranding 2, suit customization has been greatly expanded and is available much earlier in the game. DS2 introduces suits with printed designs that serve practical purposes, such as camouflage. Among these suits is the porter suit, a basic suit that can be recolored. Unlike in DS1, the suit color palette is not unique, and is shared across all customizable items. As with other customization options, suits can only be recolored in private rooms or at delivery terminals.
