DHV Magellan is a Deep-Tar hunting vessel. A highly technological ship that traverses underground tar currents and can surface anywhere within the chiral network[1], and Drawbridge's mobile base.
Overview[]
The DHV Magellan logo.
The DHV Magellan is part of the technological, as well as financial, help from the generous supporter of Drawbridge named Charlie. It can navigate through the tar to move from one point to another, but it can only do so within the chiral network and can therefore only reach Sam on his expedition when it connects new areas to the network. When the ship is in motion, moving through the tar currents, internal chiral density rises to extremely high levels. The DHV Megellan is piloted by Tarman. He is assisted by a computer, saving the other crew members from having to be present. The DHV Magellan is equipped with private rooms for its crew, an armory, and other facilites. The ship has since been repurposed by Drawbridge as their mobile base. Drawbridge's Q-pid was used to preemptively ensure that the President would not be able to seize control of the ship, so the secret countermeasures that had been prepared to foil APAS 4000's plans could be successfully implemented.
Areas[]
Cabins[]
The crew cabins are very basic, equal for all, and similar to the private rooms used by Bridges. The shower is shared and is located at the end of the main corridor.
Armory[]
Room of the ship where crew members can check and adjust weapons before an assignment. The weapons are displayed in various showcases depending on their type, there is also a sort of VR helmet, probably to test weapons safely.
DHV Magellan's Cannon[]
A type of railgun built using the chiral cyclotron provided by South Fort Knot, and fitted to the DHV Magellan using a special material. Although it sports a comparatively short barrel for a railgun, the cannon compensates by accelerating particles in the cyclotron's chiral field. This enables it to fire projectiles at devastatingly high speeds over long distances with minimal recoil.
Support Weapon: Chiral Cluster Bomb[]
A compact, multi-warhead cruise missile fired from the DHV Magellan's main cannon. It excels at supressing wide areas of the battlefield, and like a MIRV missile, will deploy in the air above its target, unleashing several powerful warheads loaded with chiralium. It is extremely effective on all types of enemies including BTs, but can deal lethal damage to human combatants, so this is strongly discouraged against them. Improvements to the chiral cyclotron have suprressed the irregular buoyancy effects generated by chiral particles, enabling the stable, high-velocity propulsion of large quantities of chiralium.
Support Weapon: Golden Hunters[]
A BT weapon that can be fired from the DHV Magellan's auxiliary cannon. The Tar Therapist's research has reveal that a type of microscopic chiral crystal—known as BT crystals, equivalent to the core of a small BT—is present within the tar currents. These crystals respond to humans by adopting the form of a humanoid hunter BT. If these microscopic BT crystals are collected from the tar, they can be combined with chiral crystals to create so-called "hunter rockets." These artifically created BTs will not trigger voidouts, but rather drag human targets into the tar, then disappear shortly afterward. They are therefore believed to pose little risk to civilian bystanders.
Support Weapon: Fireworks[]
Mesmerizing fireworks that can be shot from the DHV Magellan's auxiliary cannon. They've been produced using records of a pre-Stranding firework manufacturing process believed to have been left behind by a Japanese craftsman, and happened upon by the Pioneer. These chiral fireworks contain small amounts of chiral crystals mixed with gunpowder, which produce large blossoms of light that delight and overwhelm onlookers. The loud noises can be used to mask Sam's presence. It's most effective when being used during nighttime.
Notes[]
- The DHV Magellan is named after the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, who is credited for navigating the first expedition across the globe in 1519-22 (though he was killed in the Philippines in 1521 after pissing off the locals, and his surviving men finished the expedition in his stead).
- 'DHV' is a ship prefix, a combination of letters, usually abbreviations, used in front of the name of a civilian or naval ship that served numerous purposes, such as identifying the vessel's mode of propulsion, purpose, or ownership/nationality. For the DHV Magellan, it stands for The Deep-tar Hunting Vessel (DHV) Magellan.
- Toward the end of the game, Die-Hardman claims that, in addition to "Deep-tar Hunting Vessel", DHV signifies "Die-Hardman's Vessel", alluding to the fact that he was behind the operations the entire time.
- The Magellan's general shape and turret give it a deep resemblance to Metal Gear REX, the walker superweapon from Metal Gear Solid, the game that propelled Hideo Kojima to fame.
