Dollman is a member of Drawbridge and a companion of Sam during his new expedition.
Overview[]
The man who would become Dollman was once a spirit medium. His wife, a nurse, died in a tar tsunami that consumed the hospital she worked at. The medium's daughter convinced him to bring her into the hospital ruins in an attempt to speak with her mother again. Unfortunately, when they found his wife's BT, she failed to remember them, instead summoning a swarm of gazers that buried the two in a tar current. As she died, the girl's ka became trapped in her doll; the medium's final act was to swap places with her, allowing his daughter's ka to move on while his remained stranded behind.
The doll, along with the bodies of both father and daughter, were eventually expelled out into a tar bog. The doll was eventually found by Fragile, who had been looking to recruit the medium for her operation. After some convincing, the doll agreed to join her, under the new alias "Dollman". At his request, Fragile buried the bog bodies of him and his daughter.
Australian Expedition[]
Dollman was instructed to accompany Sam during the Australian expedition. His purpose was two-fold: first, it would be to provide Sam the ability to sense BTs; second, he was to help Sam mourn Lou's death. At Fragile's request, he played along with Sam's belief that Lou's ka was still in her old BB pod.
Traits[]
Personality[]
While frequently snarky, Dollman is a compassionate and perceptive man.
Physical Description[]
Dollman is a small doll reminiscent of a marionette puppet. His movement is noticeably slower, almost akin to stop-motion animation.
Abilities[]
Notes[]
- He is based after Turkish-German film director, screenwriter and producer Fatih Akin, who asked Kojima himself to "become one of the characters in the game". The voice and acting was done by Jonathan Roumie, popular for his work on the TV drama "The Chosen".[1]
- The Living Doll design seems to be inspired by the Bunraku puppets, especially for the head (kashira). By pulling a string, the expression of the puppet can be changed to show that the human has turned into a yōkai (strange apparition) or a onryō (vengeful spirit).
- To give the feel of stop-motion animation, Kojima lowered the frame rate of his animations.[2]
- Dollman's favorite song Horizon Dreamer is sung by Daichi Miura. While telling Sam about his background, His wife's favorite song Polytope is also sung by Daichi Miura. Both songs were exclusively created for Death Stranding.
